History

The Bernese breed can be traced to their ancestry of the Roman invasion of Switzerland over 2,000 years ago. The Mastiffs of Rome were crossed with the native flock-guarding dogs, this produced a breed that was able to withstand the severe weather.

Their name is taken from the canton of Bern in the central farmlands of Switzerland. The Bernese were originally used for herding cattle and as guard dogs, but were later developed for draught work; they were engaged for light haulage duties by the weavers of Berne and by cheese makers who used them to collect milk from the mountain farms.

Today the Bernese Mountain Dogs popularity is increasing due to their striking beauty and loving devotion to their families.
